What is a Gua Sha Oil?

To help explain what a gua sha oil is, first, we need to explain what gua sha is.

What is Gua Sha-ing?

Gua sha is a traditional Eastern Asian practice that uses a gua sha stone to stimulate circulation. The concave shape is the most common stone shape (see below to the left).

This shape allows for both small areas (like under the eye and around the nose) and large areas (like cheeks and forehead) to be reached.

The gentle sweeping motions (as shown in the diagram on the right)help to relieve fluid under the skin, sculpting the face. Since the stone is pressed directly to the skin, this is where the importance of gua sha oil comes into play.

What is an Oil?

Oils are non-polar substances that are primarily made up of hydrocarbons. This means they don’t mix with water and they have a “greasy” skin feel to them.

Since oils do not mix with water, facial oils are able to sit on top of the skin with minimal absorbance. If oil does absorb into the face, it absorbs into the topmost layer decreasing the skin’s natural oil production levels.

An oil’s ability to sit on the skin allows it to act as a long-lasting lubricate for the gua sha stone, aiding the stone to smoothly glide across the skin. Without this substance, the stone could pull and cause damage to the skin.

The “greasy” skin feel of oils furthers the aforementioned benefits.

Combining above, a gua sha oil is…

A substance that aids a gua sha stone along the face, allowing it to glide rather than tug at the skin.
