What are the Benefits of Gua Sha?

Gua sha is…

… a traditional Chinese medicinal treatment where the skin is gently scraped with a smooth, flat tool. These motions work to improve circulation and reduce inflammation in the face and neck. The gua sha tool is typically made of a smooth, hard stone such as jade, rose quartz, or sometimes even bone. While using the gua sha technique, the tool is held with a comfortable grip and moved over the skin in a precise pattern like the one shown below.

If you don’t have access to a gua sha tool, it’s possible to follow the same motions of a gua sha massage using just your hands. The drawback is that your hands are unable to provide the same level of precision or effectiveness as a gua sha tool since the tool is specifically designed to apply an even amount of pressure at all points. This maximizes the benefits. However, using your fingers is still better than skipping the facial massage entirely.

benefits of gua sha

Although quite simple, the gua sha technique has been recognized by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries as a way to treat muscle pain, muscle stiffness, and a variety of other ailments.

  • circulation

One of the primary benefits of gua sha is its ability to improve circulation. When the skin is scraped with a gua sha tool, tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin become dilated encouraging blood flow.

This increased blood flow reduces inflammation, improves the delivery of nutrients to bodily tissues, and even speeds up the body’s healing process. Improving circulation can also reduce muscle soreness and stiffness.

  • immune system

In addition to circulatory benefits, some studies have shown that daily gua sha practice boosts the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells and activating the body's natural healing processes.

  • digestive system

By stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and improving the movement of food through the intestines, the gua sha technique also aids and improves digestion.

  • cosmetic benefits

The gua sha is most commonly known for its numerous cosmetic benefits. Daily practice can improve the skin’s overall appearance by increasing blood flow to the face and stimulating the production of collagen, which is responsible for keeping the skin looking youthful and healthy. As previously mentioned, gua sha increases circulation which can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

It is important to note that although gua sha can be a relaxing and rejuvenating self-care activity, it should not be the sole means of addressing concerns about any serious health concerns.

How to gua sha

The best part of gua sha is its simplicity. The practice is also very affordable and can easily be done daily at home since all you need is a smooth, flat tool (such as a jade or rose quartz roller) and a gentle product to lubricate the skin. It’s also helpful to have a clean towel or cloth on hand to wipe away any excess oil or debris when the practice is finished, but any old towel (or Kleenex for that matter) will do.

The steps:

  1. Cleanse your face: Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup from the day.

  2. Apply an oil-based product for lubricant: Apply any gentle, oil-based product to your skin. This reduces friction between the skin and the tool, preventing any micro tears or tugging of the skin.

  3. Begin the massage: Hold the gua sha tool with a firm (but comfortable) grip with your fingertips. Begin the massage by pulling the tool along your skin in the directions shown in the image above. Use light to moderate pressure.

  4. Follow a specific pattern: The tool should be moved in a specific pattern, starting at the center of the face and moving outwards towards the hairline and down the neck. Refer to the image above.

  5. Repeat the massage: Repeat the massage on each area of the face and neck until the entire area has been covered. Each motion is typically repeated anywhere from 5 to 20 times.

  6. Wipe away any excess oil or debris: When you've completed your practice, gently wipe away any excess oil or debris with a clean towel or cloth.

How often should you gua sha

The frequency of practice depends on each individual’s preferences and goals. Some people may choose to use a gua sha daily, while others monthly, and others annually (although I doubt they reap many of the gua sha benefits). Gua sha can be performed as often as you want, although it is generally recommended to do it at least once a week for optimal results. Start with a weekly routine and see how your skin responds. Then, adjust the frequency as needed. The easiest place this practice into your routine is at night after cleansing. It’s the perfect way to wind down your day.

Remember to be gentle and avoid applying too much pressure. The skin is fragile and should be treated gently. Too much pressure can damage the skin by creating micro tears and is outright uncomfortable. This practice should be relaxing. Additionally, avoid massaging any areas of the face that are inflamed or injured (this includes places that are actively breaking out). Let those areas of your face heal.

While gua sha is generally considered to be safe and effective, it is good practice to consult with a healthcare professional before trying any new treatment.
