Cruelty Free Skincare Brands

Cruelty-free

adjective

the manufacturing and development of cosmetic products that do not involve experimentation or testing on animals of its ingredients, formulations, or finished products.

Cruelty-free cosmetic practices have become an expectation. As it should be present day, since there is no need to test any cosmetic products on living animals.

Cruelty-free (not to be confused with vegan) means that a product contains no animal testing from top to bottom.

Yes, this includes the safety testing of every single ingredient.

When formulating cruelty-free skincare, cosmetic scientists must carefully source their ingredients, ensuring the ingredients they choose to use come with a cruelty-free certificate.

Vegan skincare means that the ingredients within a product contain no animal byproducts. Common animal byproducts that are often used in the formulation process include:

  • honey (from honey bees)

  • squalene (which can be derived from shark liver)

  • gelatin (from cow or pig bones)

  • lanolin (wool grease from sheep)

Although often listed together, it is possible for a cosmetic product to be only vegan or only cruelty-free.

Here are some lesser-known cruelty-free skincare brands (we’ve also noted if they create vegan formulations).
