What is chamomile?

Chamomile is a plant most historically known for the calming tea its leaves produced when stewed. Popular for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile (specifically blue chamomile) has quickly become a common skincare ingredient.

There are two types of chamomile:

• German Chamomile

  This is the more common type used in skincare. With its powerful antioxidant benefits, german chamomile is preferred because of its ability to calm inflammation, relieve irritation, and reduce redness.

• Roman Chamomile

  This type is not as commonly used in cosmetics but is commonly found in tea. This chamomile also has wonderful antioxidant benefits and can be used for the same purposes as german chamomile.

The main difference between the two types of chamomile is the way in which it is grown. German chamomile grows low to the ground and only blossoms once a year. That means it can only be harvested once a year. Its essential oil is a vibrant blue color. In contrast, the Roman chamomile grows upright in stalks and it blossoms all year round.

Who should use chamomile?

Since chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory effects, this is a perfect addition to your routine if you struggle with:
